Years of Experience
Born in the 90s and raised in Argentina, the economic recession of 2001 led many Argentines, including my family, to emigrate in search of a better future in Spain. There I studied Hispanic Philology at the University of Seville and had the opportunity to study in the United Kingdom at Royal Holloway University of London in the same year of Brexit in 2016. I traveled through many European countries, first settling in Scotland, starting to work as a freelance Spanish teacher. Living in Edinburgh I met several Hong Kong exchange students in the city, which led me to become increasingly interested in the Chinese language. This eventually led me to travel to Asia for the first time, passing through South Korea, Japan and Taiwan, settling permanently in Hong Kong in 2019
During my student years I was able to help some classmates study Spanish, there I had my first experience as a teacher. Later in Scotland the student profile changed and the students I prepared wanted to take level exams. In Hong Kong, this experience was also extended to children who were first-timers to the language. This has given me a wide range of experience with different profiles of students, in different countries, of different ages and with different learning purposes.
Being a language learner myself has also helped me a lot to understand my students. In particular, Chinese is a language so different from my native language that one is used to trying different learning methodologies. I would say that the most important lesson in this process is that a language is not only learned (grammar) but fundamentally acquired. How do we acquire a language? Although exposure is important, and some methodologies can help a little more than others, it is very important to know that acquiring vocabulary and a reading habit is, in my opinion, one of the most effective ways of acquiring a language in the long term.
